In order to enhance snow clearing and accessibility in the downtown, the City is introducing a new parking restriction from 3:30 to 6:30 a.m. daily on Water Street and Duckworth Street beginning mid-January.  The exact start date of the new parking restriction will be communicated in the coming days once signage is in place.

“City officials and I have met with Downtown St. John's to discuss ways to improve snow clearing in the business district,” said Councillor Debbie Hanlon, Council Representative for Downtown St. John’s. “We have decided to implement a late night parking restriction for the 2018 winter season with a goal of improving snow clearing for motorists and pedestrians.”

The parking restriction is a pilot project and will coincide with the winter On-Street Parking Ban. Any motor vehicles that are parked in violation of the restriction will be impounded.

“We are pleased that the City of St. John’s is undertaking this pilot project in an effort to improve the accessibility of downtown during the winter months,” said Scott Cluney, Executive Director of Downtown St. John’s. “We encourage business owners to help communicate this new restriction with their staff and customers. There is ample parking available after hours in various parking lots and garages throughout downtown.”

The project will be evaluated in consultation with Downtown St. John’s in the spring to determine if the restriction should remain permanent. The exact area of parking restriction is on Water Street between Prescott Street and Waldegrave Street (TD Building to St. John’s Convention Centre), and on Duckworth Street between Cochrane Street and New Gower Street (Sir Humphrey Gilbert Building to Majestic Theatre).
