Thursday, June 25, 2015 - 1:15 PM
New and gently used sneakers, shin guards and other sports equipment

On Monday June 29, from 9 a.m to 6 p.m., help support local children and youth by dropping off your used sports equipment at the City of St. John’s Recreation Experiences and Leisure Program (R.E.A.L.) office, 1 Crosbie Place, Crosbie Building.

Sneakers, cleats, basketball shoes, baseball items, skates, helmets, dance items, running jackets, balls and monetary donations will also be accepted. The equipment drive is hosted in partnership with Taking Strides and the ANE Running Club. All donations go directly to support the R.E.A.L program.

The purpose of the R.E.A.L program is to provide recreation and leisure opportunities to children and youth in financial need, by matching them with organized recreational activities of their choice. The R.E.A.L. program is 100% confidential, and provides this opportunity to local youth by covering registration fees, transportation, and equipment costs.

The R.E.A.L program is a non-profit entity and the City of St. John’s provides all staffing and administrative costs so that 100% of all funding goes directly towards placing kids in the activity of their choice.

Since the R.E.A.L. Program started in 2002, there has been a steady growth in the number of participants each year.  In recent years average number of placements has been over 2,100 annually.
