Remembrance Day at Home

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Royal Canadian Legion Newfoundland and Labrador Remembrance Day parade is unable to take place. A small ceremony will be held at the war memorial, but it will not be open to the public.

To allow residents to pay their respects and to recognize this important day without a mass gathering, the Legion and the City encourage citizens to observe a moment of silence at your front door.

“We want to provide an alternate and safe way for people to pay their respects, while also maintaining safe distancing and respecting health guidelines,” said Mayor Danny Breen. “At 11 a.m. on November 11, we ask that you step outside the front door of your home and observe two minutes of silence for our veterans, our fallen soldiers and those who continue to serve.”

The Legion are holding their annual poppy campaign at this time and are encouraging residents to wear a poppy and consider decorating your windows and doors with poppies as a safe way to participate in the Remembrance Day at Home event.

Everyone should be given the opportunity to show their respect for our Fallen Comrades and to those who are still serving today,” said Berkley Lawrence, Immediate Past President/Poppy and Remembrance Chairman, Newfoundland and Labrador Command. “This silent salute from the citizens of our capital city is a great way to show this respect. The Legion thanks the city leadership for this opportunity"

The City and the Legion are encouraging residents to share the Remembrance Day at Home event with friends and family, and on social media. Other municipalities are welcome and encouraged to participate.
