As Canada Day approaches, residents of St. John’s are reminded of a new Fireworks By-Law which states that family fireworks are only allowed on Canada Day and New Year’s Eve from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. the following day.

Family fireworks consists of low-hazard fireworks used for recreational use. The goal of the new By-Law is a balanced approach to meet the various needs and wishes of residents and the community.

Canada Day Fireworks Safety Tips:

  • Setting off some family fireworks on Canada Day is a tradition that is still allowed under the new By-Law. With Canada Day just around the corner, we like to share some fireworks safety tips to help you ring in the holiday safely:
  • Only purchase authorized fireworks that will have a bilingual label on it.
  • Use fireworks outdoors only as they are not designed for indoor use.
  • Choose a clean and open space to set-off fireworks that is away from buildings, vehicles, public roads, public places and overhead obstruction such as power lines.
  • Before you set-off fireworks, please have a bucket of water and a fire extinguisher nearby in case of a malfunction or fire.
  • Dispose of used fireworks (including debris) in a pail of water.
  • Please keep fireworks away from children under all circumstances.
  • Be sure to read all the instructions printed on the fireworks package before use.

With these tips in mind, you'll be on your way to a bright, but safe start to Canada Day.

In the case of unsuitable weather, the family fireworks will be postponed to the following day of July 2. If the meantime, if you like to learn more about the new Fireworks By-Law, please visit the City’s website.
