As Canada Day approaches, residents of St. John’s are reminded of a new Fireworks By-Law which states that family fireworks are only allowed on Canada Day from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. the following day.

Family fireworks consists of low-hazard fireworks used for recreational use. The By-Law also sets out rules and restrictions on the way family fireworks can be discharged that include:

  • Must be 18 years and older to discharge fireworks
  • Cannot throw fireworks in, into, or on buildings, vehicles or public roads, and public places
  • Must-have access to a fire extinguisher and bucket of water ready for immediate use
  • Need to follow instructions printed on the fireworks package

The new Fireworks By-Law was implemented in response to residents’ concerns about the disruption that fireworks cause, including noise and the impact on animals, people, and property. The goal of the new By-Law is a balanced approach to meet the various needs and wishes of residents and the community.

Residents who enjoy fireworks are invited to celebrate Canada Day by attending the City of St. John’s public fireworks display on Friday, July 1 at 10 p.m. over Quidi Vidi Lake.

In the case of unsuitable weather, both the public fireworks display and family fireworks, will be postponed to the following day of July 2.
