Sanitation Regulations: New Four-Bag Limit Proposed

Thursday, November 26, 2020 - 12:30 PM

The updated Sanitation Regulations have been discussed during Committee of the Whole meetings and require approval at an upcoming Regular Council Meeting. These proposed regulations include a new four-bag limit on the number of garbage bags that residents without automated carts can put at the curb.

The actual start date of the four-bag limit is not yet final, and the City has discretion on the timeline for this change.

Once approved, the regulations must be advertised and posted in the provincial government Gazette before they become official. It is projected that this process will be completed in January 2021.

Early in the new year, details will be communicated via the City website, PSA and though social media so residents are informed of these changes to waste collection. There will be an awareness campaign around the implementation date and the City will allow a transition period for residents to get used to the new four-bag limit, similar to when households were provided automated carts.

Note that the automated carts that are currently in place hold four regular-sized garbage bags. Once the new regulations are implemented residents without the cart will have the same four-bag limit.
