Today, the City of St. John’s officially unveiled the colourful mural on Scanlan’s Lane in downtown St. John’s, between Water Street and Duckworth Street. The project was completed by artist Kyle Bustin, a mural painter, graphic designer, and multimedia artist.

“On behalf of City Council we are very impressed with the mural which is a reflection of our beautiful landscape in St. John’s and surrounding area,” said Councillor Sandy Hickman, Chair of the Murals Committee and Council member on the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee. “I congratulate the talented artist, Kyle Bustin, for his dedication to this project and for a job well done.”

In June, the City accepted proposals for a mural to be painted on the retaining wall located at Scanlan’s Lane. Kyle was the successful proponent and began work on the mural in late July, completing the project by late August of this year.

“The mural includes coastal landscapes and images of life that exists around these landscapes,” said Kyle Bustin. “The style of my painting references both traditional practices and stylistic influence from contemporary street art practice.”

Since 2005 the City has contracted artists to design and complete several murals throughout St. John’s including: Victoria Street steps; Duckworth Street; Flowers Hill; Battery Road; and Blackhead Road. The annual budget for this program is $20,000. Murals provide an opportunity to engage residents and visitors with art by showcasing local artists and City heritage.

The City of St. John’s would like to acknowledge the support of Benjamin Moore who generously donated the paint for the Scanlan’s Lane mural.
