Senior of the Year: Barbara Howlett

Monday, October 03, 2016 - 4:15 PM

Today, at the weekly City Council meeting Barbara Howlett will receive the City of St. John’s Senior of the Year Award, sponsored by Kenny’s Pond Retirement Living.

“Barbara is devoted to her community, and has been an active volunteer in the Gould's for more than 60 years,” said Councillor Tom Hann. “She volunteers with St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Goulds Lioness Club, NL Liberal Association and Twin Brooks Condominium Board to name a few. Recently, she was recognized by Girl Guides of Canada for 60 consecutive years of service where she served as a Brownie and Girl Guide leader.”

The Senior of the Year award recognizes a senior who has made significant contributions to the community through volunteering, helping others, or participating in activities such as music, sport, recreation, or art.

“I grew up in a family where my parents were always volunteering, so it was part of my life from the beginning,” said Barbara Howlett. “I continue to give back to my community and the more I do, the more I enjoy it. It makes me feel good to help others."

As one of her nominators noted, her greatest trait of service is the joy of fun and laughter that she brings to the whole realm of service, she absolutely loves what she does. See backgrounder attached for full bio.

“Thank you Barbara for the great service you provide to the community of Goulds and the City of St. John’s,” said Councillor Hann.
