St. John’s Celebrates National Tree Day

The City of St. John’s, with support from Tree Canada, is celebrating National Forest Week (September 18 to 24) and the 12-year anniversary of National Tree Day on September 21.

On Wednesday, the City along with students from Larkall Academy, Tree Canada, the Bowring Park Foundation, Clean St. John’s, Newfoundland Power, and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will celebrate National Tree Day with a tree planting ceremony and BBQ at the Kenmount Terrace Community Centre. The event begins at 11 a.m. and all are welcome to attend. It will go ahead rain or shine.

National Tree Day is an opportunity for Canadians to appreciate the great benefits that trees provide us - clean air, wildlife habitat, reduced energy demands and opportunities to connect with nature. This year’s theme for National Forest week is “Canada’s Forests: Solutions for a Changing Climate.”

The City encourages residents to show their appreciation for trees and forests on September 21. Here are a few fun ideas if you’d like to plan your own National Tree Day event.

In addition to National Tree Day, the City of St. John’s plants 400 to 500 trees annually.  This done in recognition of the multitude of environmental benefits that trees provide.
