St. John’s Observes Canada Day

City Council are asking residents to take this time to reflect, and to acknowledge the importance of working together to build a stronger Canada. Residents can educate themselves by learning about the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the Calls for Justice of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The City will be marking the occasion in the following ways:

Memorial Day Ceremony
On July 1, the City of St. John’s is sponsoring a NTV broadcast of the Memorial Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. with a re-broadcast of the ceremony and performance of the National Anthem from 6:30 to 7 p.m. The anthem will be performed by Shelley Neville and Peter Halley.

Bench-Mark ‘Welcome’ Project
Local organizations with diverse backgrounds will ‘leave their mark’ on Canada Day through an installment of hand painted benches. Each bench is a unique work of art, designed to welcome newcomers and visitors to St. John’s. The benches will be displayed in the green space at the corner of Prescott Street and Duckworth Street from July 1 to 5, and later distributed throughout downtown.

Due to continued COVID-19 restrictions, the City is not recognizing Canada Day in the usual way this year. There are no fireworks, or in-person events being held.
