St. John’s commemorates Memorial Day and celebrates Canada Day from sunrise to sunset on Friday, July 1, with free events throughout the City.
 
In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the First World War the City of St. John's has establish a tribute website, please visit homefront.stjohns.ca.
 
Sunrise Event - Signal Hill
The Sunrise Event begins 6 a.m. at Signal Hill National Historic Site. A free accessible shuttle service by Metrobus will run from the Signal Hill Interpretation Centre, beginning at 5 a.m.

Canada Day Celebrations on Confederation Hill
At 1:30 p.m. family entertainment begins on Confederation Hill with bouncy castles, kids carnival, face painting, a cultural showcase and a concert on the Memorial Stage. Donations will be accepted for the Bridges to Hope Food Bank.
 
Canada Day at Quidi Vidi Lake – Navigators and Fireworks

An evening concert featuring the Navigators at the Quidi Vidi Lake bandstand will begin at 8:30 p.m., followed by fireworks at 10 p.m. If weather conditions are not ideal, the fireworks will be rescheduled for July 2 at 10 p.m.  Accessible parking is available on a first come, first served basis in the Dominion parking lot. The Dog Park and a portion of the walking trail around Quidi Vidi Lake will be closed for fireworks set-up and will be reopened after the fireworks display is completed. Pet owners - if your pet needs to go outside during the fireworks display, keep them on a leash for their safety.
 
Road Closures and No Stopping - Tow Away Zones
For safety reasons there will be multiple road closures and no-parking zones throughout the City to facilitate Memorial Day and Canada Day events. Traffic advisories are posted on the City’s website, or you can sign up for e-Updates, choose ‘Traffic Advisories’.
 
Park and Ride on July 1
Free Metrobus shuttles will run every 10 minutes throughout the day on July 1 starting at 9:30 a.m. until approximately 4 p.m. Shuttles will run from the Marine Institute on Ridge Road and from the Johnson Building on Factory Lane providing service to:

  • The War Memorial Ceremony (11 a.m. event time)
  • The Rooms, Centennial Commemoration of the First World War and the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel (1:30 p.m. event time)
  • City of St. John’s Canada Day Celebrations on Confederation Hill (1:30 p.m. event time)
