Valuing Water

World Water Day, recognized on March 22 since 1993, is an annual United Nations Observance day focusing on the importance of clean and fresh water for all. It raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people living in the world without access to safe water.

The 2021 theme of World Water Day is valuing water; what water means to people, its true value and how we can better protect this vital resource.

The City of St. John’s is committed to bringing the highest quality water to residents, businesses and visitors. Our drinking water is supplied from Windsor Lake, Bay Bulls Big Pond and Petty Harbour Long Pond watersheds.

Each of the City of St. John’s water treatment facilities has its own Water Quality Laboratory staffed by qualified lab technologists, who work closely with the system operators to monitor the quality of water throughout the treatment process and the distribution system. Samples are collected routinely from each of the treatment facilities and throughout the distribution system, and are then analyzed for microbial, chemical and physical parameters to ensure the safety and integrity of the drinking water system.
