Vehicles in City of St. John's impound lot

As of Sunday, Nov. 1 the vehicle impound fee in the City of St. John’s has increased. In addition to the contracted towing charge of $200, there is a $50 administration charge and the daily impound fee of $25 for each day or part day the towed vehicle is in the City’s possession.

“The City undertakes a tendering process for towing services and this year the contracted cost is $200, the full amount of which goes to the towing company,” explains Councillor Danny Breen, the chair of the Public Works Standing Committee. “This tendered price is higher than for other towing services because of the difficult and often confrontational nature of the work.”

Impounded vehicles are stored at the City’s Depot at 25 Blackler Avenue and can be picked up from the Depot gatehouse by the registered owner/renter from 8 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. Vehicles are released when all charges are paid and proof of registration and insurance is presented.

“The administration charge is new this year, and the daily impounding fee that has increased from $3 to $25 is to recoup the costs incurred by the City to process, store and release impounded vehicles,” says Councillor Breen.
