We’re Hiring Recreation and Inclusion Staff

The City of St. John's is hiring several casual recreation positions for fall, details are posted online.

We’re hiring Recreation Counsellors, Inclusion Counsellors, Outdoor Recreation Instructors and an Inclusion Recreation Assistant.

Recreation Counsellors - we require energetic and skilled people to work in a variety of programs within the Division that focus on play, learning and physical activity for children, pre-teens and youth.
Accountabilities:

  • Implement a variety of recreational activities as outlined by supervisors
  • Enhance program content through building on participant interests and directly supervising program participants
  • Possess a strong sense of safety awareness; good oral communication, customer service skills and problem solving ability.

Outdoor Recreation Instructors - we require staff to plan and implement various outdoor programs.
Accountabilities:

  • Developing program content for outdoor recreation and environmental/ecological programming;
  • Developing lesson plans with learning progressions; providing direct leadership and instruction for group programs;
  • Advising on safety and emergency measures;
  • Ensuring proper use, transport, storage and maintenance of equipment;
  • Providing opportunities for participants to develop leadership and team building skills; and completing various reports.

Inclusion Counsellors will support and foster inclusive experiences for participants of all ages facing barriers to participation in recreation division programs (not including respite/personal care).
Accountabilities

  • Inclusion staff will provide the support and adaptations necessary to break down barriers that may prevent meaningful participation in recreation programs.
  • Inclusion staff work with participants and other staff to adapt and accommodate for differences; teach participants skills; guide behaviour and foster open communication with parents/guardians and other staff. 

Recreation Assistant Inclusion - Inclusive Services staff support for participants living with a disability/barrier to participate in a program, direct programming, the R.E.A.L. Program and Canadian Tire Jumpstart. We require an energetic, skilled individual to assist in the day to day operations of this program.
Accountabilities:

  • Assist with program planning, setup and cleanup for various programs and events.
  • Ensure quality programming through adherence to established policies, procedures and safety standards.
  • Ensure effective communication with program participants, parents, and the general public with an emphasis on good customer service. Maintain confidentiality regarding participant/family information and related documentation.
  • Perform necessary administrative duties such as filing, completing reference checks on applicants, assist with participant assessments, collect and record information, maintain communication between programs and parents/guardians, inventory duties, and help out with related training, events and fundraisers.
