On July 26, the City announced public engagement for proposed naturalization projects, including tree planting, at three City-owned parks and open spaces: Buckmaster's Circle, Mundy Pond Park and Denis Lawlor Park in Airport Heights. Feedback has been gathered through EngageStJohns.ca, emails and calls to Access St. John's.

What we heard on the proposed approach to incorporate natural areas in these three parks includes:

  • Respecting informal pathways
  • Not reducing existing seating
  • Considering educational and recreational use within the area
  • Working with specialists to ensure best practices
  • Considering the addition of fruit trees, fruit shrubs and flowering plants.

Participants also suggested that, beyond the scope of this project, the City work to further incorporate naturalization and tree planting considerations in development regulations and other projects.

Based on the feedback and support received for the Buckmaster's Circle and Mundy Pond Park sites, the naturalization of those areas will proceed as proposed and work will begin next week.

Regarding Airport Heights, a virtual information session will take place 7 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 18 to further engage with the neighbourhood on the Denis Lawlor Park naturalization plan; register to attend:
