From May to November, yard waste in paper yard waste bags is collected at the curb on the same day as recycling day. There is no limit to the number of paper yard waste bags put at the curb and each bag must weigh less than 22 kg. Learn all the details at CurbItStJohns.ca.

Grass, leaves, sod, plant trimmings and small branches must be put in paper yard waste bags at the curb; yard waste in plastic bags will not be collected. Mulching or backyard composting grass clippings and fallen leaves are options to curbside disposal.

Yard waste in paper bags is also accepted at the Residential Drop Off at the Robin Hood Bay Waste Management Facility. All paper bagged yard waste is composted on-site and used in landscaping projects.

Since 2018, the City of St. John’s has required the use of paper yard waste bags for curbside yard waste disposal, given the high economic and environmental costs of landfilling this easily compostable material. Composting these 3,000 tonnes of yard waste has resulted in a reduction of approximately 93 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e), equivalent to taking 28 passenger vehicles off the road for a year, as well as a savings of approximately $200,000 in tipping fees.

The City of St. John’s is committed to a city that is sustainable today and for future generations; economically, environmentally and financially. Diverting additional waste from the landfill is identified in the Our City, Our Future 2021 Action Plan under the goal to preserve and enhance the natural and built environment.
