Yard Waste Collection Resumes in May

On Mon. May 2, yard waste collection at the curb will resume on the same day as your recycling day, until the end of November. There is no limit to the number of paper yard waste bags you can put at the curb. Plastic bags containing yard waste will not be collected.

The yard waste collection program is suitable for leaves, grass clippings, plants, shrubs, weeds, twigs and small branches with a maximum diameter of 2.5 centimeters. On recycling day, place an unlimited number of:

• Paper yard waste bags weighing 23 kg (50 lbs) or less
• Tied bundles measuring maximum 60 cm by 60 cm by 30 cm (2ft x 2ft x 1ft) 

Yard waste in paper bags is also accepted at the Residential Drop Off at the Robin Hood Bay Waste Management Facility. All paper bagged yard waste is composted on-site and used in landscaping projects. Learn more at CurbItStJohns.ca.

Since 2018, the City of St. John’s has required the use of paper yard waste bags for curbside yard waste, given the high economic and environmental costs of landfilling compostable material. Composting nearly 4,000 tonnes of yard waste has reduced approximately 123 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to taking 38 passenger vehicles off the road for a year, and a savings of $286,750 in tipping fees.

The City of St. John’s is committed to a city that is sustainable today and for future generations; economically, environmentally and financially. Diverting additional waste from the landfill is identified in the Our City, Our Future 2022 Action Plan under the goal to preserve and enhance the natural and built environment.
