Winter Bird Count for Kids

When:
Saturday, January 25, 2020 - 10:00am
Where:
Bowring Park, meet at Peter Pan statue

Nature NL, in collaboration with Jared Clarke from Bird the Rock and Catherine Dale from Birds Canada, is excited to be hosting another winter bird count for kids on Saturday, January 25, 2020. This morning event will bring all the fun and learning of the adult bird counts to the younger set.

We will meet at 10 a.m. at the Peter Pan Statue next to the Duck Pond on the east side of the park (see below for a map showing the location).

After a short introduction, we will divide into groups and start the count. The count involves walking around the area(s), listening and looking for any and all birds, and recording everything we see during that time. After the count, we'll wrap up with hot chocolate, talk about the birds we saw, and share some stories.

After the count, all data is submitted to Birds Canada and eBird just like all the other counts across the country, so you and your family will be a small part of a very big citizen science project!

Please feel free to bring your binoculars, bird guide, or a spotting scope if you have them; however, these are not necessary to enjoy yourself! We will provide a few extra pairs of binoculars and some small field guides for kids. We do ask that you:

- Please dress very warmly (birding often involves a lot of standing!)

- Conditions may be icy, so we encourage you to wear good boots and ice grippers if possible

- Bring a reusable mug to partake in hot chocolate

You may leave at any time if your kids can't attend the full event; just let your group leader know before you leave so we can account for everyone. We won't be feeding ducks or other birds during this event, although we will watch for birds at some bird feeders!

If the weather is unsafe for driving or outdoor activities, we will postpone the event. Please check our Facebook page before heading out as any cancellations will be posted on our page by 9 a.m. that day.

If you have any questions, please message Nature NL on our Facebook page. There is no cost to attend - this event is supported by Nature NL members and donations
