SANITARY SEWER SMOKE TEST

Main Road (Between Bishop’s Line and Durdle Drive), including Durdle Drive

The City of St. John’s Water & Wastewater Division will conducting a smoke test in the local sanitary sewer in your area on Monday, November 14, 2016 between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.

A smoke test is done by Installing a large fan over a manhole andblowing artificially produced smoke “vapor” into the sanitary sewer system.  The City gains valuable information regarding deficiencies within the sewer system by observing where smoke is exiting the system.

No fire is used to create this smoke.

It is normal for the smoke to exit through the roof stack of your home.

There is a possibility that smoke will emerge from plumbing fixtures in your home. This can happen if your home sewer traps are empty of water or a trap is missing form your plumbing system. Possible locations are sinks, toilets, floor drains or around the outside of the home from the weeping tile.

If smoke emerges into your home, there is a possibility that harmful sewer gases may get blown into your home; therefore, please exit your home immediately and contact the City workers in the area or call 311 or 754-CITY (2489).

The City of St. John's apologizes for any inconvenience. If you require further information, please contact Access St. John's at 311 or 754-CITY (2489).
