What is 'Volunteering @ St. John’s'?

Volunteering @ St. John’s is an initiative that focuses on the recruitment, retention and recognition of volunteers and supports the City of St. John’s in the delivery of Community Services.

How Do I get Involved?

It’s Easy …

  1. Email volunteer@stjohns.ca.
  2. We will provide you with the Volunteer Application Package which includes a waiver to apply for a RNC Code of Conduct and Vulnerable Sector Check.
  3. When we have received your documents we will meet with you and find a rewarding placement.

The City of St. John's is always looking for energetic volunteers to support recreation and leisure activities for persons of all ages and abilities.
Please Note: Volunteer opportunities may be limited in some programs and services or only offered seasonally.
 
Children’s Programs
There is always a need for volunteers that have a specific skillset to enhance recreational services for children ages preschool to 12 years. Our programs are diverse and always looking for new and exciting things to offer.

Inclusive Services
The City of St. John’s is committed to providing accessible recreation and leisure services for the residents of St. John’s. A friendly, helpful volunteer to support individuals with a wide range of abilities is always welcome. This is a very rewarding experience for both volunteers and those they assist.

Special Events
Looking for a great way to get engaged in the community but your time is limited? The Department of Community Services offers a variety of special events such as Canada Day Celebrations, National Child Day, and Festival of Music and Lights, just to mention a few. Enthusiastic volunteers are needed on the day of the event as greeters, to assist with refreshments, etc.

Tourism & Culture
Did you know there is a great opportunity to meet people from abroad and represent your community? Volunteer Ambassadors make a lasting impression as they greet visitors to our beautiful City. These valuable volunteers may refer visitors to local destinations, connect them with Visitor Service Centre’s, or simply offer to take a picture.

Humane Service
Volunteers with Humane Services (Animal Shelter) can provide a valuable friendship and support to our four legged friends. Furry friends are waiting to be walked, hugged and played with.

Building Tomorrow’s Leaders
Children ages 11 to 13 will develop early leadership and first aid skills by participating in the Red Cross Babysitters Course or the Home Alone course. Youth ages 12 to 18 years will become confident in their recreational leadership and teamwork skills through participating in Youth Leadership Courses.
 

High School Students - Career Development Course Hours Available
Students who require volunteer hours as part of the English School Districts Career Development course are welcome and encouraged to volunteer in one of our many programs or services.

Older Adults Have So Much to Offer
Connecting children, youth and older adults is important to support active healthy lifestyles. Individuals or complexes for senior living who wish to engage with children and youth are encouraged to contact us to discuss opportunities.
